Welcome to the Homeschool Photography Summer Class!
*For homeschool students in Mankato and the surrounding areas.
Ready to spark your child's creativity this summer? In this fun and hands-on class, homeschool students will explore the art of storytelling through photography.
Over 5 days, they’ll discover foundational photography skills - including how to use light and shadow, compose powerful images, create with minimalism, and capture unique portraits. No fancy camera required - just curiosity and a creative spirit!
Led by Laura Harstad, a professional photographer and homeschool mom, each session combines interactive instruction with plenty of time for students to practice and explore. Throughout the week, students will visit inspiring locations around Mankato, using these diverse settings to bring their stories to life through the lens.
By the end of the class, students will walk away with a collection of images they’re proud of and a new way to see the world around them!

Here's what students can expect from the Homeschool Photography Class:
1. Exploring Light and Shadow: Students will learn how to utilize light and shadow to enhance their storytelling. They'll experiment with different lighting conditions and techniques to create mood and atmosphere in their photographs.
2. Understanding Composition: Through guided exercises, students will discover how to compose their images effectively to tell a compelling story. They'll explore techniques such as framing, leading lines, and perspective to guide the viewer's eye and evoke emotion.
3. Creative Minimalism: Students will discover the power of minimalism in storytelling. Students will learn how to convey meaning and emotion through simplicity, focusing on essential elements to create impactful narratives.
4. Unique Portraits: From candid moments to carefully crafted portraits, students will explore the art of photographing people. They'll learn how to capture personality, emotion, and narrative within a single frame.
5. Final Photography Project: The last day of class, the students will have an opportunity to apply what they have learned and to experiment with creating their own unique style of photography.

Laura Harstad is a professional photographer, homeschool mom, and experienced teacher who loves helping students see the world through a more creative lens. She runs a global virtual brand photography business and has connected with people all over the world - virtually photographing clients on all seven continents.
Passionate about spreading joy, Laura photographs each person in a way that makes them feel valued and celebrated - lighting up the world with their beautiful smiles.
Laura’s summer homeschool photography classes are designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and encourage students to develop their own unique photgraphy style - all in an encouraging, joyful learning environment.
