Welcome to the Homeschool Photography Summer Class!

 

*For homeschool students in Mankato and the surrounding areas.

 

In this fun and creative class, students will go on a journey into the world of storytelling through photography. This 5-day class focuses on fundamental principles such as using light and shadow, understanding composition, creative minimalism, and capturing unique portraits.

Led by Laura Harstad, a professional photographer & homeschool mom, each session will blend hands-on learning with interactive instruction - equipping students with the tools to start telling their own stories through photography.

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to draw inspiration from a variety of locations in Mankato, MN. These outings will offer diverse settings allowing students to immerse themselves in storytelling through their photographs.

Camera Equipment

Here's what students can expect from the Homeschool Photography Class:

​

1. Exploring Light and Shadow: Students will learn how to utilize light and shadow to enhance their storytelling. They'll experiment with different lighting conditions and techniques to create mood and atmosphere in their photographs.

2. Understanding Composition: Through guided exercises, students will discover how to compose their images effectively to tell a compelling story. They'll explore techniques such as framing, leading lines, and perspective to guide the viewer's eye and evoke emotion.

​

3. Creative Minimalism: Students will discover the power of minimalism in storytelling. Students will learn how to convey meaning and emotion through simplicity, focusing on essential elements to create impactful narratives.

​

4. Unique Portraits: From candid moments to carefully crafted portraits, students will explore the art of photographing people. They'll learn how to capture personality, emotion, and narrative within a single frame.

5. Final Photography Project: The last day of class, the students will have an opportunity to apply what they have learned and to experiment with creating their own unique style of photography.

Class Details:

  • Grades: 4-12

  • Cost: $50 per student

  • Length: 5 days

  • Time: 9:30am - 11:00am

  • Location: Various locations in Mankato, MN

  • Dates: Two classes will be offered this summer. 

    • July 22-26​

    • August 5-9

  • Class size: limit 10 students per class

  • Camera: students can use any smartphone, point-and-shoot, or DSLR (We will be shooting in auto mode)

Meet the Instructor

Laura Harstad is a Professional Photographer who specializes in branding photo shoots for entrepreneurs through the magic of virtual photography. (Yes, virtual!)

 

Laura has connected with people all over the world - photographing clients on six continents with the final continent, Antarctica, scheduled for this fall.

 

Passionate about spreading joy, Laura photographs each person in a way that makes them feel valued and celebrated - lighting up the world with their beautiful smiles.
